i don't get it why do some people sell theres and some give away free? id rather have some dough than a couple of backlinks

They add some backlines to the designer site in the footer usually.. But 80% of webmasters take it off and this is not that fair..

Not always... some times footer is crypted, and some times normal people (no webmasters or coders) doesn't care about links at footer).
