Even though I don't use graphic softwares that much, I can say that my favorite ones are Photoshop and SmartDraw ( the last one, I use it for designing business cards, whenever I need'em )

The term desktop publishing was originally coined to describe Aldus (now Adobe) PageMaker and among professional designers refers primarily to high-end page layout software applications including Adobe InDesign and QuarkXPress. These are also the primary page layout programs considered to be graphic design software. Additionally, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator are frequently used graphics software programs used for professional graphic design work.

Photoshop CS3 is my preference. It simply has the most complete feature-set and is the most visually intuitive graphical design software out right now.

I've used GIMP in the past too, but found it to be rather difficult to use. Admittedly, some of that was probably due to my bias towards Photoshop since its what I've used consistently for years, but regardless, GIMP just doesn't have the same kind of polish and easy to use interface that Photoshop does in my opinion.

Anybody here love GIMP and is willing to make an argument for it? I'd be willing to try it out again if someone would give me a reason to.
