I think they play more of a role than people give them credit for, they are still used no matter what people say, ive seen the differences in serps just though adding good keywords and descriptions, if Meta tags didnt matter how could this be ?

Meta tags may not guarantee a high position in SERP. But, they do give you considerable control over how your website is displayed. And if necessary, they enable you to prevent your website from being indexed at all, so they shouldn't be left out.
