Meta tags importance

Alot of people have very different views on meta tags and weather they still count in current search engines, whats you views on this ?

Well for me meta tags take a variety of forms and serve a variety of purposes, but in the context of search engine optimization when people refer to meta tags, they are usually referring to the meta description tag and the meta keywords tag.

The meta description tag and the meta keywords tag were proposed so that webmasters would have a consistent method for providing meta document data to user agents, such as search engines.

So it's still important for me and specially to use the most searched keywords in search engnies to bring some more traffic to my website (They do actually)..
But I do not abuse it, I always make keywords related to the content of my website!

Of course! If you know what is the keywords importance then you will get to know that meta tags bring visitors!

Search engines, now a days doesn't give much importance to meta tags.

Keywords are about the most important aspect of this, the rest is pretty much redundent.

Actually, I've read that Google pays no attention to the keyword tag and only uses the description tag for providing a description on the SERP: Top 10 Google Myths Revealed [Search Marketing]

I think that they are still used to some degree, having a good meta description can and has helped me gain a place in SERPs if i was delete it i would say it would drop again, Just because someone says its not relevant any more it doesn't mean that it isn't in one of googles millions of formula's for good SERP's ?!

Meta tag helps with human visitors, when people search for keywords in your industry, you still need to convince those humans to click on your link. The way to do that is to design the most effective page description that can possibly appear in the SERPs.
