Have any of you tried social media marketing? For those of you who dont know what this is, it is using your website's facebook page to look at the profiles of those who "liked" it; checking their age, where they live e.t.c and marketing your software to them. For example, If the majority of my "likers" were liveing in the UK, I might change the words in my ad campaign from americanised english to english. So instead of Color I would say colour e.t.c

Well you may want to go out into the open and try other websites such as Twitter, Digg, Yahoo Answers etc; I use a bundle of around 20-30 websites that are high trafficked, Facebook seems to send a lot less traffic to other sites compared to twitter and others.

Once people are using Facebook, they rarely leave Facebook.

Yes but its much harder to tell who likes your producton other sites, using twitter would defeat the purpose of this type of social media marketing.

How so? Twitter has Retweet, Yahoo Answers has Best Answer etc; Almost all social media websites have some form of allowing people to "like" or share something internally.

But people are quicker to click like on facebook rather than retweet on twitter (mainly because to click like on facebook is quicker, even if only by a second haha) , so you get a wider scope of who likes your site.

Maybe so, but still in the real world how would this help a website? Facebook has significantly less outbound traffic compared to Twitter, Tumblr and others. It is designed to keep the community contained within Facebook and it does a good job at it.

Yep, and I was lucky and inspired enough to make it perfectly from the first tries.

There are some that think "social media marketing" is just the latest buzz phrase in marketing, but the truth is it is a new venue that you can use to market and promote your products and services. Social media centers around interaction with colleagues, potential customers as well as current customers.

Social Media Marketing isn't new, rewind the clock back to 2 years ago and everyone was focusing on getting 200,000 backlinks or something stupid. Social media existed back then but not many people considered it a good way to gain traffic and leads.

Only just noticed this post, it would be interesting to find out what the first few sites that used it were :p

Definitely, you should always study and understand your audience. If your Facebook fans are the young, you should make your posts more interesting to them.

Turn the clock back two years ago, social media marketing is not new, 200,000 Backlinks to focus on me being stupid. Social media is present, but again, most people not regarded as a great way to get traffic and leads.

You've got to make a decision one way or another, it's an all in proposition. If you decide to promote on social networks you need to devote a lot of resources to it or the benefits are minimal. The other option is to simply avoid them and instead make it easy for others to send content to the social networks. I like that approach on forums when a visitor might want to share a thread they are active in just to get more opinions.

I think if not confused I haven’t got your point there. I have always thought that social medial marketing is the concept of gaining more traffic to your business website by creating unique platforms on your social networks to allow your potential and existing clients to easily, quickly and continually interact and share ideas but with all the profits returning to your business. Besides that I know of many other social networks additionally to facebook…so please may you help me understand your point. It may or may not be me who’s not on the track here.

I think anyone who is not using Social Media is only hurting themselves and their business. With millions of people on Facebook, Youtube, Pinterest, and Twitter, you can easily generate thousands of visitors to your site using just a couple of these sites.

Many people make a full time living only using One social media site to promote their business/product.

I think it's very important to find out who your audience are then you can aim what you are doing at those people. I think you would be stupid to not use Social Media these days :)
