3Ds Max hiding polys?

Discussion in 'Digital Media' started by The Sauce Man, Mar 13, 2008.

  1. I am making a tree and there are over 300,000 polygons per branch (made the trunk and branch seperate). I don't know thats alot of polys but I wanted to go all out, but now im starting to regret it.

Max is getting really laggy with all of this and I need a helpful trick to either hide seperate polygons to save memory. Please help.

Read the help files on proxy objects and X-refs.
Another thing we do to keep polycount low while working is to model below a meshsmooth or tubosmooth modifier. Turn meshsmooth off while previewing.
Try to always model at the low polygon level. The lowest cylinder that can be modeled has 3 sides. Consider modeling your trees this way and then use meshsmooth to make them come out rounded.
Don't try to model bark unless you have zbrush.
