What we have to check while submitting website in any web directory. Check some of these general points before doing submissions -

    * Web directory shouldn't be a dead source, first of all.
    * It should be in Search engines indexing. You can check it by [index:] and [info:] commands in Google and can also be checked by Yahoo! Site Explorer. It Shouldn't be Banned Web Directory.
    * Should be relevant to your business, or should have a category for your business. Submission in a irrelevant category / directory will just worthless.
    * That will be great if web directory having high PageRank.
    * Make sure that the directory shouldn't have any rel=nofollow on the links.

Theres a lot of directories out there that are claiming to be high PR, however the inner pages are often with low or no PR, never rely on the PR claims of directories. Also don't rely on acceptance in the directory, or even notification of acceptance or rejection.

Yes I agree. But on some point, directories do increase page rank, if the directory site is a PR0 and update it to PR1, there is some chance that your website will get much promotion because increasing page rank may increase traffic to that directory in such a fact that your site will be more visible on some visitors who include their site to that directory.

Then also the directories should be maintained up-to-date, weeding out unwanted data

I always maintain that submitting to PR0 pages is not fruitless, they could be the high PR pages of tomorrow, the point I was making that some directories advertise as say PR4, but the listings pages are much lower.
Having submitted to directories, then months later found that they were never updated I couldn't agree more with this.

some points that should be kept in mind during directory submission:
1.Not to submit in a link page where number of outbound links are very high.
2.Not to submit in a directory that's url is dynamic
2.Not submit any directory which gives instant links.
