Today this girl that I "work with" asked me that. She was asking because she was interested in switching from the department she works in to the one I work in but it was still sort of awkward to have someone ask me out right how much I make. I did tell her what the starting pay was but I was tempted to tell her she was being rude but I wasnt sure that she was being rude. Was she?
Oh, I dont know... maybe because its personal information.

kei, In my opinion I do think it is rude to ask how much money somebody makes. I believe that that is personal, and none of their business.

I assume some people do not mind answering that question.

For those that do - I would just politely say "For me, that is personal and means a lot to me. I'm not trying to make you feel uncomfortable for asking, but I just want to be honest with you."

I think it depends on the situation. In that situation I might be a little put off, but I wouldn't mind. However, if you were offended then you could have told her that you didn't want to answer, because it's not her business.
