Spiders don't read images on your web pages but they do read their textual descriptions in the <alt> tag, so if you have images on your page, fill in the <alt> tag with some of relevant keywords about them.

You can be counted in the search results.

This is often over seen by some webmasters and even i can be lazy at times and not put any ALT tags, also another thing with Images is to name the image file with the keywords, there is massive traffic potential if you can get your images optimized for google , yahoo and msn images. Another thing to do if you are using images from somewhere else on the web is to rename them and resize them, its a way of making them unique, like unique content. Google loves unique images too ;)

All all images should have alt text, every image including small icons must have an ALT Label because talking browsers can read the ALT Label and speak it to the user.

the term “alt tag” is a commonly used abbreviation of what's actually an alt attribute on an img tag. For any image on your site, the alt tagshould describe what's on it. Screen readers for the blind and visually impaired will read out this text and thus make your image accessible.
