and what upgrades to I need to have to install and have it work properly.
os x 10.4.10 click the apple logo top left and click on software update it will do it for you.
The latest OS is OS X Tiger 10.4.10. You don't need to install any additional software as long as you Mac meets the system requirements for Tiger. Here's a link to all the information you need about upgrading: http://www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/
By the way, an upgraded version of Tiger (called Leopard 10.5) will come out in October. I suggest waiting for that. Here's a link to information about the new OS, Leopard: http://www.apple.com/macosx/leopard/
it depends on what sort of mac you have, the latest is 10.4.10 which you will update to from any version of 10.4 you have.
If you have an older version like 10.2 you'd need to buy 10.4 or wait until 10.5 comes out.
An older mac like a G3 may not be able to run it though.
